Action for Education

Marlow Refugee Action can proudly announce about a new partnership with Action for Education, an NGO operating on the Greek Islands.

Our latest project is one which we’re incredibly excited about; it has long been an ambition of ours to partner with an education NGO to support our work with local schools and this latest venture allows us to fulfil this goal.

Speaking on the partnership, Action for Education said:

“establishing a close and mutual partnership where the Marlow community can gather round and understand the context and nature of our work through story-telling is exactly the kind of partnership we value the most.

We’re always happy to help in this way, and apart from our key impact goals of providing support and education to asylum-seekers, we’re also focussed on this kind of communication, to generate positive messaging and empathy”

Action for Education (AFE) were established in 2018 by a group of long-term volunteers working on the Greek island of Chios. Having inherited projects started by Be Aware and Share in 2016, the past 18 months has seen them expand their operation to Samos and commence work with a team of over 50 volunteers across their Greek centres, hosting welcoming and community-orientated spaces for up to 1,000 beneficiaries a month.

Marlow Refugee Action will be working collaboratively with AFE by supporting two of their current projects in Samos, “The Nest” and “The Computer Lab”, providing regular funding towards the costs of these education facilities.

In order to do this, we are looking for regular donors to help support these projects on an ongoing basis… would you be willing to donate £5 or £10 a month for 12 months to help us sustain and expand upon the fantastic work being done?

In addition to “The Nest” and “The Computer Lab”, discussions with AFE have brought to light a further area in need of long-term support…

This includes the support, training and housing provided for teachers and volunteers from the refugee community. As it stands, the AFE team is a 50/50 split between ‘international’ volunteers and local volunteers, the latter of whom are undertaking the asylum process.

Much like ourselves at Marlow Refugee Action, AFE believe it’s important to offer refugees within the camps the chance and opportunity to get involved with their work.

But to do that meaningfully, they also want to support these volunteers, with housing and a modest food allowance.

On Samos, AFE currently have 15 refugee community volunteers and rent 2 apartments which provides an invaluable opportunity for them to live in dignity, with better conditions, and in turn be able to give back to the refugee community.

Not only does it give 15 people a home, it facilitates the building blocks of a career as well as enabling some of the world’s most vulnerable children to have teachers!

In order to do this, we are looking for regular donors to help support these projects on an ongoing basis… would you be willing to donate £5 or £10 a month for 12 months to help us sustain and expand upon the fantastic work being done?

We hope to bring you regular updates about our partnership with AFE on these projects in Samos in the near future.

Positively, AFE are also keen to support our work with local schools in informing and educating the next generation so if you are a parent or teacher who would like to know more about this, please get in touch.
